Dior Brings Bold Splash Of Colour To Paris Fashion Week

In 1942, when Dior left the army, he joined the fashion house of Lucien Lelong, where he and Balmain were the primary designers. His sister, Catherine (1917–2008), served as a member of the French Resistance, was captured by the Gestapo, and sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp, where she was incarcerated until her liberation in May 1945. In 1947, he named his debut fragrance, Miss Dior in tribute to his sister. In 1946 Marcel Boussac, a successful entrepreneur known as the richest man in France, invited Dior to design for Philippe et Gaston, a Paris fashion house launched in 1925. Dior refused, wishing to make a fresh start under his own name rather than reviving an old brand. On 8 December 1946, with Boussac’s backing, Dior founded his fashion house.

The collection was so revolutionary in its figure and form, that it was named the “New Look”. The designer drew on the house’s collections under the creative leadership of Marc Bohan, who was known for modernizing styles by loosening silhouettes in the 1960s and 1970s. In their loft location at 30 avenue Montaigne, the haute couture workshops are the soul of the House of Dior. Here, time seems to stand still as skilled seamstresses – the celebrated “Petites Mains” – execute exceptional savoir-faire, carrying on closely-guarded secrets.

Still, this may be one of Chiuri’s strongest collections at to date. The best looks were some of the simplest, proving that she doesn’t need all that pomp and circumstance to make a statement on the runway. Of course, she doesn’t abandon Monsieur Dior’s own codes altogether, proposing several new, relaxed takes on the Bar jacket and putting the brand’s signature Cannage quilting on lightweight coats. In fact, the expansive collection could have used some editing; the middle sags under the weight of a suite of boxing-inspired sets which, unfortunately, look a little cheap.

This series is the ultimate compendium of the most memorable haute couture creations conceived by the renowned house – beginning with its inception to its present-day collections. Initially, women protested because his designs covered up their legs, which they had been unused to because of the previous limitations on fabric. Coco ChanelWith her trademark suits and little black dresses, fashion designer Coco Chanel created timeless designs that are still popular today.

I’ve gone through an intense period of transition in my life, in my womanhood. I feel a level of freedom and openness, a desire to explore different sides of my womanhood, which I’m blessed to be able to express through my fashion choices. My stylist always tells me fashion is as exciting as you want to make it. I want to hold space for the expansion of ideas of what fashion can be and who fashion can be for, whether that means wearing more traditionally masculine styles as a woman, or silhouettes not traditionally worn in certain spaces, etc. This season, Chiuri turned to Bohan’s 1961 “Slim Look” collection for inspiration, and she benefitted greatly from this perspective. The collection’s ’60s vibes are stripped of much of the froth that’s been present in so many Estee Lauder makeup collections under Chiuri — think voluminous tulle skirts and pleated, diaphanous gowns — in favor of clean lines and and boxy cuts.
