Dior’s Spring 2022 Collection Pays Tribute To Its Swinging ’60s Past

Cast in attractive and elegant geometric forms, Dior’s eyewear presents a particular sophistication with an undercurrent of charming allure. French fashion house Balmain celebrated the 10-year anniversary of creative director Olivier Rousteing’s tenure with a catwalk show featuring a host of celebrity models including Naomi Campbell, former French First Lady Carla Bruni, Milla Jovovich and Natalia Vodianova. The central atrium of our Beaux-Arts Court has been redesigned as an enchanted garden, and a concluding gallery celebrates dresses worn by stars from Grace Kelly to Jennifer Lawrence. Still, this may be one of Chiuri’s strongest collections at Dior to date. The best looks were some of the simplest, proving that she doesn’t need all that pomp and circumstance to make a statement on the runway. Of course, she doesn’t abandon Monsieur Dior’s own codes altogether, proposing several new, relaxed takes on the Bar jacket and putting the brand’s signature Cannage quilting on lightweight coats. In fact, the expansive collection could have used some editing; the middle sags under the weight of a suite of boxing-inspired sets which, unfortunately, look a little cheap.

Tongue-in-cheek humor was never far away from the design inspirations and blue, of course, was the defining color of the show. Oozing sex appeal and glamour, designer Anthony Vaccarello was in a confident mood, breaking out Estee Lauder NIGHT REPAIR of his normally restrictive short-skirted silhouettes for a bold collection that twinned style with provocation.
