Right from the beginning, Schwinn and Arnold set the goal of producing a bicycle of undeniably superior design; something that would separate itself from the sea of cheap ramshackle models flooding the market. The company branded its product the “World” bicycle, and loaded its early catalogs with flowery language of international conquest. The Schwinn Bicycle Company emerged during the bicycle boom of the 1890s, a period where over 200 cycle manufacturers and small shops operated in Chicago alone.

It’s outfitted with a lightweight aluminum frame that’s available in black and white paint jobs. The frame also features an integrated rear rack, so you can carry panniers or attach a child seat and take your child along for the ride. The High Timber Schwinn mountain bike also features 21 gears with Shimano components and an aluminum frame with relaxed upright geometry. The company briefly (1978–1979) produced a bicycle styled after the California mountain bikes, the Klunker 5. Using the standard electro-forged cantilever frame, and fitted with five-speed derailleur gears and knobby tires, the Klunker 5 was never heavily marketed, and was not even listed in the Schwinn product catalog. Unlike its progenitors, the Klunker proved incapable of withstanding hard off-road use, and after an unsuccessful attempt to reintroduce the model as the Spitfire 5, it was dropped from production.

The company sells two bike lines; the first one uses the specialty shops to sell high-end models – known as the Signature Series. The other line features discount bikes that are available through platforms like K-Mart, Sears, and Wall-Mart. One is a range of discount bikes offered by mass-merchandisers such as Wal-Mart, Sears, and Kmart. The additional line, known as the Signature Series, featured on their website, are higher-end models marketed through specialty shops. Its bike lines include cruisers, road, hybrids, urban, kids, and electric. Once America’s preeminent bicycle manufacturer, the Schwinn brand, as with many other bicycle manufacturers, affixed itself to fabrication in China and Taiwan, fueling most of its corporate parent’s growth.

But they’re all cranking back to life in the town that taught America how to build things. Judith Crown, who is a senior correspondent for BusinessWeek in Chicago and worked for Crain’s Chicago Business, started the book in 1992 after she heard that Schwinn was in serious financial trouble. At the close of the 1920s, the stock market crash decimated the American motorcycle industry, taking Excelsior-Henderson with it.
