This budget-friendly grill is a cookout centerpiece

Lightweight construction consists of a thin 430 stainless steel lid, control panel, single door and handles and painted steel side shelves and cart on four casters. Not only does it provide a welcome bit of storage space, but it also protects your propane tank and the regulator from the effects of wind, snow, and rain. That’s good for both safety and performance, and it’s a heck of a lot nicer to look at, too, than an exposed propane tank.

The Char-Broil also features an instant-on propane tank, so your preheat time is only about minutes. Luckily, this grill from Char-Broil comes with 500 square inches of space, which is more than enough to cater for most of your grilling. When weber spirit 2 combined its neighboring side burner and drying rack, the total cooking area of it comes to 660 square inches. This generally means that the grill comes with a dedicated rotisserie burner; the motor and spit are usually purchased separately.

So, expect style, decent quality, and reasonably durable grilling gear. When you make rubs at home we recommend you add salt first then the herbs and spices because salt penetrates deep and the other stuff remains on the surface. We put salt in these bottled rubs because all commercial rubs have salt and consumers expect it. You can still use these as a dry brine, just sprinkle the rub on well in advance to give the salt time to penetrate. For very thick cuts of meat, we recommend adding a bit more salt.

I spent the better part of two weeks grilling on the Char-Broil Performance XL. It looks good, performs well and at $299, it was the most affordable grill we tested. I’d recommend the Char-Broil Performance XL to beginners and grillmasters alike.

However, the first time you have a cookout, you’ll notice the size of your grill’s surface. If you plan to cook dozens of burgers, hot dogs or even a few large steaks at once, consider a grill with a larger surface area. Most manufacturers list the square inches of grill surface among their specs. The grease pan is porcelain-coated, making the cleanup and maintenance a breeze. With two side shelves made of stainless steel, you get ample work and prep space. Just put your food inside, close the lid, and monitor the heat while cracking a cold one.

The rust-resistant porcelain-coated cast-iron grates are durable and allow you to enjoy the same performance each new cooking session. The side burner is an excellent way to further spice things up by preparing sauces or sides. There are top-ported burners that provide a wide temperature range while the lid-mounted temperature gauge allows you to monitor the heat. Since the burners emit heat from the top, this allows for even burning. However, as mentioned in the What We Don’t Like section, one of the problems we noticed is that these burners tend to run cool. Coming from a popular grill brand, the Char-Broil Performance Stainless Steel 4-Burner Gas Grill is a medium-sized propane gas grill with quite a few good features.

Newer grills are built to pack a great deal of flavor into the burgers, steaks, chicken and other meats you make. Grill designers understand the elements that prevent meat from char broil performance drying out and build their burners and grates to match that. It’s easy to clean and maintain, comes with two wheels for easy mobility, and it’s friendly on the wallet.

The side burner on the Char-Broil Performance Gas Grill gives you extra cooking space, in addition to the 500 square inches you get on the grill’s surface. You’ll also find the rust-resistant cast-iron grates provide impressive durability. This grill uses the Surefire Electronic Ignition System for reliable one-touch starts every time. The cooking area is about 300 square inches primary and 100 square inches on the warming rack. It’s on the smaller side of grills, so this is to be expected.

This way, you won’t get third-degree burns from touching the grill. The Weber Spirit E-310 offers a step up in quality of materials and build as well as a longer warranty. The Char-Broil Performance 475 typically heats up in about 10 to 20 minutes. The grill distributes heat very well and retains even temperature with high consistency.

The burgers cooked evenly, though on high heat they were more well done than I prefer. With the Performance XL, my chickens took on average of 1 hour, 11 minutes to fully cook, not including a 10-minute preheat. That’s faster than the other three grills we tested, and the chickens from this grill were easily the favorite of the group. The grill grates are porcelain-coated cast iron meaning they’re not only made to last but also to be easily cleaned using a hard wire brush. That means you don’t need to worry about washing or scrubbing these to get them ready for the next use.
